Regarding the recently published article about Mayor Justin Bibb’s “plan” to charge more fees to property owners and visitors to the downtown lakefront to generate more funding for downtown lakefront improvements (”Visiting the lakefront? There may be a fee for that,” Nov. 20), in Cleveland, it’s certainly true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
For disclosure, I don’t visit downtown often and, as far as I see it, for good reason. Still, this story made me chuckle. After all, isn’t this the usual tired ol’ “plan” for downtown improvements dusted off by every Cleveland “visionary?” Want nice things in a few select neighborhoods of the city but can’t afford to pay for them? Just charge visitors more for the privilege of visiting in order to afford giving those visitors what they might actually want …. That’s the ticket ….
