Policy: The air strike warning was issued on Thursday and applied to most of the Kharkiv region, located in northeastern Ukraine. Early Friday night, the warning was lifted.

It happened shortly after Kharkiv, which is the country’s second largest city, had been attacked by at least five drones, according to Kharkiv region governor Oleh Synjehubov. According to Kharkiv city mayor Ihor Terehov, the city was also under a Russian rocket attack.

When the warning was lifted early Friday night, there was still no information on whether anyone had been killed or injured. According to Synjehubov, it was the Osnovjanskyj district in Kharkiv city that was attacked. The attack sparked a fire, according to the mayor.

Broadcaster Suspilne reports that the air alert warning lasted for more than 16 hours in Kharkiv city, the longest continuous period since Russia launched the war of aggression in February 2022.

Russian forces launched a surprise attack against the northern part of the Kharkiv region on Friday last week. Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are fighting each other in a number of villages near the border with Russia. In this part of the Kharkiv region, the danger warning of air strikes is still valid, according to Suspilne.
