Démare in top form skips the Vuelta, but drives: ‘European Championship, Hamburg and classics in Belgium and France’

Arnaud Démare was by far the fastest sprinter in the final stage of the Tour of Poland. The Groupama-FDJ Frenchman passed his closest rivals with playful ease and was able to raise his arm. A nice victory for the Frenchman, who skips the Vuelta but is preparing for various one-day races.

In a chaotic final, Démare had to find his own way, he said after the race in the flash interview. “It wasn’t an ideal sprint, because at one kilometer from the finish I might have been in position twenty or twenty-five. I was very far, but in the end I came forward anyway and waited for a good opening. I had a lot of speed and made the right choice to stomp past the front on the left. I am very happy with this sprint.’

The Frenchman thus closes the Tour of Poland with a stage win, earlier this week he came up short. Although he also came here for other reasons, not just for stage wins. “The goal was to go full throttle in the more difficult stage, so I gave everything every day, except in the time trial. For me it was a perfect week. To work in the mid-mountains was very good, I was never once in the grupetto!’

Démare ignores Vuelta, opts for classics

With this form, and with the previous success in the giro, a Vuelta participation was probably not an illogical choice. However, Démare and his Groupama-FDJ team opt for a different route in the autumn, he says after the finish. ‘I know that this will be very good for what is to come: the European Championship, Hamburg (the BEMER Cyclassics, ed.) and then the classics in Belgium and France.’ Démare finished ninth, sixth, second and first in the Tour of Poland in four sprint stages. He won the points classification.
