Sport: Djokovic has not played since the world number one lost to Ruud in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters just over a week ago.

The Serbian was not part of Monday’s draw for the ATP Masters1000 tournament in Madrid. There he has previously won the title three times (most recently in 2016).

Ruud is the fifth seed and goes straight to the 2nd round. There he meets the winner of the match between Zhang Zhizhen from China (49 in the world) and Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (66).

In a potential quarter-final, one of the year’s winningest players, Jannik Sinner, could become Ruud’s opponent.

Ruud will be among the favorites to go all the way in this year’s Madrid Open. On Sunday, he took his biggest win of his career by winning the Barcelona Open, which is at the ATP500 level.
