Dodge City teen dies in state custody

DODGE CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says a teenager in the custody of the Northeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center has died.

The agency says they were contacted Tuesday to investigate the death of a 17-year-old male from Dodge City who was at the facility in connection to a child in need of care case. State law requires the KBI to investigate any death of an adult in a detention facility or child in state, county, or city custody.

The KBI says the 17-year-old was found unresponsive around 6:50 a.m., and staff began life-saving measures. Geary County EMS took over treatment and transported the child to a local hospital.

He was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of his death.

The case is still under investigation by the KBI.

The teen’s name has not been released at this time.
