Economy and business: Friday’s rise in New York was admittedly only 0.3 percent, but it was enough to push the Dow Jones to 40,003.59 points. It is the first time in history that the Dow Jones has ended above 40,000 points.

The broader S&P 500 index also rose, up 0.1 percent, while the technology exchange Nasdaq fell 0.1 percent.

Throughout the week, global indices have reached new highs, driven by hopes of interest rate cuts in the US and other countries, as a result of signs of lower inflation.

Oil prices were rising on Friday evening. Then North Sea oil traded for USD 83.98 a barrel, an increase of 0.9 percent, while American light oil traded for USD 80.06 a barrel, an increase of 1 percent.
