Social conditions: In Monday’s meeting, Recep Tayyip Erdogan referred to the participants in the annual singing competition as “Trojan horses” that will create “social corruption”.

– We now see that it was absolutely right to decide to keep Turkey out of this shameful competition, says the president.

This year, Eurovision got its first non-binary winner. According to Erdogan, the competition encourages gender-neutral artists, which he believes are a threat to the traditional family formation.

Turkey has not participated in 2012, but the artist Sertab contributed during one of the semi-finals in Malmö two weeks ago. There she performed her winning song “Every way that I can” from 2003. It is Turkey’s only victory. The country has participated 35 times and hosted the final in Istanbul in 2004, the year after Sertab’s victory.
