Policy: – The Kariye Mosque in its new form will remain open to everyone, Erdogan said at a press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Ankara on Monday.

The Kariye Mosque was formerly an Orthodox church, then a mosque and until recently a museum. Mitsotakis has criticized the decision on the former Khora Church, which is adorned with mosaics dating to early 14th-century Constantinople, today’s Istanbul. The church was transformed into a mosque half a century after the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1453.

After World War II and until today, the building housed the Kariye Museum, which was opened in a Turkey that built a more secular republic after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

– I discussed the transformation with Erdogan and expressed my displeasure to him, says Mitsotakis about the matter.

Erdogan’s decision about the Kariye Museum became known already in 2020. In the same year, Erdogan announced that the Unesco-listed Hagia Sofia – former cathedral, then mosque and museum, will once again be used as a mosque.
