Farmer protest in EU election week – blocked border crossings with tractors

French and Spanish farmers blocked the Le Perthus border crossing on the AP-7 motorway in Catalonia. Policy: The dissatisfaction of the European farmers has been widely known for a long time. Earlier this year they blocked roads for several weeks, on Monday they blocked border crossings between France and Spain.

– Since there are EU elections, let’s see if our politicians take our sector seriously and listen to our demands, says the Spanish farmer Josep Juscafrase.

The 54-year-old is supported by a colleague from the other side of the border.

– In France, agriculture is demanding. For the last 20 years or more it has been neglected. We are the ones who give the people food, says Sylvain Fourriques.

In the fight against what the farmers believe are excessive costs, taxes, climate expenditure and unfair competition from countries outside the Union, they chose to close the AP-7 motorways in Catalonia and AP-8 in the Basque Country.

The EU elections are held in the various EU countries from 6 to 9 June.
