Fender-bender leads to shooting of 78-year-old man, police say

AKRON, Ohio — A 78-year-old man was wounded Thursday afternoon when a motorist opened fire following a fender-bender in the Middlebury neighborhood, police say.

The victim and suspect were driving east on East Market Street at about 4:13 p.m. when the victim’s car sideswiped the suspect’s vehicle, causing minor damage, police say. The suspect reportedly got out of his car following the crash and fired multiple shots, hitting the victim once.

The suspect drove off. The victim was taken to Summa Health Akron City Hospital. Police believe his wound is non-life-threatening but no information his condition was released.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Jon Jenkins. Officers responded to the 700 block of Ravenswood Street in East Akron after being told Jenkins was at a residence there. Jenkins was taken into custody without incident.

Jenkins is being held in the Summit County Jail on a felonious assault charge. Police say at least one handgun has been recovered.
