Sport: The more affordable VAR solution has so far been tested in two tournaments and a total of 36 matches, writes BBC.

The outcome has been “very positive”, said Fifa’s head of referees Pierluigi Collina at the football association’s congress in Bangkok on Friday.

The scheme is that each team gets two opportunities per match to challenge a referee’s decision. It is done by the head coach twirling his fingers in the air and giving the fourth referee a card, explained Collina.

The players can also recommend the coaching bench to check a situation. This is because they are closer to what is happening on the pitch.

If the video replays result in a decision being overturned, the team retains its two check opportunities. This is also the case in tennis and cricket. The number of attempts is reduced if the complaint is not upheld.

In the test scheme, key situations are checked as with the current VAR system. That means goals, penalties, red cards and cards for the wrong player.
