Sport: 52-year-old Montero, who played for Juventus for a number of years, is actually the U19 coach at the Torino club. He has never previously coached a Serie A team, but Juventus announced on Sunday that he will step in following Allegri’s sacking.

Montero will lead his first training session on Sunday, before Juventus face Bologna on Monday. The club then ends the season at home against Monza next weekend.

Allegri was fired as coach on Friday. The background was a violent outburst against the referees in last week’s Italian Cup final. The coach is also said to have been aggressive towards journalists after the game, and Juventus said his behavior was not in line with the club’s “values”.

Juventus are fourth in Serie A and have already qualified for next season’s Champions League.

Before Wednesday’s Italian Cup victory, Juventus had not won any of the previous six games. That had led to speculation that Allegri’s contract, which actually expired at the end of next season, would be terminated early.

Known as an uncompromising defender, Montero played almost 300 games for Juventus between 1996 and 2005.
