RIO DE JANEIRO, NOV 19 – G20 leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro voiced deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalating tensions in Lebanon.
In a strong statement, they emphasized the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian aid, ensure the protection of civilians and remove all constraints that prevent the provision of large-scale aid.
The leaders emphasized the severe human suffering and wider adverse consequences of the ongoing conflict.
They also reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and reiterated, “their unwavering commitment to the vision of a two-State solution.”
United in their plea for peace, the G20 called for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 as well as in Lebanon, to allow people on both sides of the Blue Line to return safely to their homes.
The declaration reflects the group’s firm commitment to fostering international cooperation and ensuring that humanitarian efforts and peacebuilding remain a global priority.
G20 leaders met in Rio de Janeiro on 18 to 19 November to address key global challenges and crises and promote strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.
Under Brazil’s Leadership, the G20 in 2024 focuses on the theme, Developing a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.
The declaration reaffirms the group’s commitment to foster strong, inclusive and balanced growth while ensuring that no one is left behind.
The declaration also highlighted slow progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with many targets lagging behind or falling behind.
In response, initiatives such as the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty have been launched to accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty. – Named
