Gabbia ends AC Milan’s suffering

MILAN, SEPT 23 – Matteo Gabbia led AC Milan to a late 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the ‘Derby della Madonnina’ clash yesterday with a powerful header while AS Roma crushed Udinese 3-0 as fans protested the sudden sacking of coach Daniele De Rossi.

Defender Gabbia rose high to head home Tijjani Reijnders’ free-kick in the 89th minute to give Milan their second win in Serie A after a lackluster start.

Paulo Fonseca’s side joined Inter on eight points in seventh place thanks to a late goal from Gabbia, who came on after Federico Dimarco had leveled Christian Pulisic’s brilliant individual effort in the 10th minute.

“They played with passion today and I think we deserved to win, I can’t remember another team that caused so many problems for Inter as we did today,” Fonseca told DAZN.

Milan’s win ended Inter’s six-match winning streak in the derby clash and prevented their rivals from regaining the top spot in Serie A on goal difference ahead of surprise leaders Torino.

“They were a good team tonight, we didn’t play as a team and it’s not something you usually say about us,” said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi.

Milan were jeered and heckled off the pitch after last week’s defeat at the hands of Liverpool but the fans returned to their support after a strong display at the San Siro.

They deserved to win after creating the best chance to win the game in the second half and were almost denied three points by a good performance from Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. – AFP
