Giro d’Italia | “Pasta tastes much better than this victory” – Tadej Pogacar laughs after first stage win

Did this victory taste better than pasta? Pogacar answered the first question from our Italian Eurosport reporter with a smile. “No, pasta really tastes much better. I could live without a victory in the Giro, but probably not without pasta.”

The bad luck, crash and comeback of course irrevocably reminded the Italians of 25 years ago, when the same thing happened to Marco Pantani (in the pink jersey) and he still won. Pogacar also thought about it Il Pirata? “I knew about it, but that was only because everyone was talking about it the last few days. Otherwise I wouldn’t have known,” he said Pogi honestly.

“I didn’t really think about it. I just thought about getting a new bike as soon as possible,” Pogacar analyzed his own final. “I made the mistake of not stopping before the bend. It was a very quick puncture, so I was basically riding on the frame of my wheel. So it was stupid to take that corner and that’s why I fell.”

To then get the help of UAE Team Emirates to return. Rafal Majka then paved the way for the Slovenian’s first – and only – attack. “The team did a great job getting me back and setting the pace. I am very happy that we were able to win this way.”

Did the new rosette wearer get any extra adrenaline from his tumbling? “Sometimes you get that, but sometimes a crash also takes away some extra energy. I don’t think this was the case today because the crash was very close to the finish. It wasn’t a hard fall and I only have a small scratch on my knee. It’s nothing bad,” Pogacar reassured his many fans.
