Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck has promised support to the struggling German car industry. After consultations with representatives of the industry, Habeck said that there should be no hasty decisions or “flash-in-the-pan measures”. It is about long-term planning.
There was agreement on this in the group. “On the condition that we talked about different possibilities.”
The measures that might come should always apply retroactively. The federal government will now consult. Habeck did not mention any concrete possible support measures. The regular dialogue with the industry, which is already taking place, will continue.
The minister also told the auto industry Support at EU level. This concerns so-called fleet limits, which are specifications for CO2 emissions. These are to be gradually tightened. Habeck said that the limits should be revised in 2026. It was the group’s wish to work towards ensuring that this happens next year. “I am happy to follow that.”
At the same time, Habeck dampened expectations. It is a European program. Many other countries do not have the same challenges as Germany. In addition, Germany has not exactly covered itself in glory in the past when it comes to transport policy, said Habeck, referring to the controversial approach to the issue of e-fuels. (dpa)
