Sport: In a squad full of NHL stars, the half-Norwegian 18-year-old got a place together with only two other players from the home Swedish league SHL. Sørum Unger is also still a junior.

– We have followed him during the year also on the junior national team. He has made progress month by month. Now we got to see him at senior level and get to know him. He is very exciting, said national team manager Sam Hallam when he presented the squad.

– It is difficult to train, but the puck comes to him. He can control the pace a little. His small movements are amazing and can make opponents uneasy, he added.

This season, the 18-year-old has played 35 games for Leksand at the top level in Swedish ice hockey.

It was also on Norwegian soil that his hockey career began. Mum Catarina is Swedish, while dad Tom Erik Sørum is from Trondheim. 18-year-old Felix has both a Swedish and a Norwegian passport.

– Dad is a real trønder, so it’s perfectly fine to call me a trønder too, said the great talent in an interview with Address newspaper last summer.

Big brother Niklas Unger Nilsen plays ice hockey for, among others, Rosenborg, Nidaros and Sparta Sarpsborg.

This means that the NHL club has secured his rights for three years. Last summer he got a taste of life in North America, when he attended a training camp with the Hurricanes.

World Cup games now await for a star-studded Swedish national team, which quite naturally will be among the favorites during the championship in the Czech Republic. The matches will be played in the big cities of Prague and Ostrava in the coming weeks.

Sweden plays in Group B together with the USA, Slovakia, Germany, France, Kazakhstan, Poland and Latvia.

Backs: Jonas Brodin (Minnesota), Rasmus Dahlin (Buffalo), Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay), Erik Karlsson (Pittsburgh), Marcus Pettersson (Pittsburgh), Lukas Bengtsson (Zug), Tim Heed (Ambri-Piotta).

Runners: André Burakovsky (Seattle), Joel Eriksson Ek (Minnesota), Marcus Johansson (Minnesota), Adrian Kempe (Los Angeles), Isac Lundeström (Anaheim), Victor Olofsson (Buffalo), Fabian Zetterlund (San Jose), Lucas Raymond ( Detroit), Jesper Frödén (Zürich), Max Friberg (Frölunda), Felix Unger Sörum (Leksand), Marcus Sörensen (Fribourg-Gotteron), Pontus Holmberg (Toronto), Linus Johansson (Färjestad), Carl Grundström (Los Angeles).

Sørum lives and plays in Leksand and represents Sweden. He was also born and raised in Trondheim.

Wednesday’s surprise WC withdrawal came after a year filled with events for Felix Unger Sørum. During last year’s NHL draft, he was selected early by the Carolina Hurricanes.
