Harald Hegstad is the new leader of the Church Council

Religion and outlook on life: The two candidates for the leadership position were Hegstad and the leader of Åpen folkekirke, Gard Sandaker-Nielsen.

Hegstad is a professor at MF science college, where he teaches and researches doctrine of faith and church understanding. He is a former leader of the Oslo Diocesan Council, and was deputy leader of the Church Council from 2016 to 2020.

Hegstad has been elected for four years and takes over the position of leader from Kristin Gunleiksrud Raaum, who has led the Church Council since 2016.

The Church Council was established in 1969 and its main task is to be the Church Meeting’s preparatory and implementing body. In practice, the Church Council governs on behalf of the Church of Norway’s members.
