Harbor House uses empathy to support people experiencing domestic violence

Harbor House uses empathy to support people experiencing domestic violence

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – While picking up the phone to make a call takes seconds, it’s often questioned countless times.

“That could be a call that they’ve been waiting to make for a very, very long time,” said Keri McGregor, program director of Catholic Charities Harbor House.

Harbor House has a hotline that’s available 24/7 for people experiencing domestic violence.

“We provide a variety of services to victims who are fleeing a domestic violence situation or just needing some additional support,” McGregor explained.

The advocates who answer the calls embody empathy.

“We’re not here to judge them, and we’re not here to tell them what to do. We are here to hear what they need, and how can we make that possible for them,” she said.

Harbor House is one of two crisis programs for people trying to leave an abusive relationship in Sedgwick County. They also offer resources beyond shelter.

“Helping them with jobs, helping them get to a court hearing that can be very overwhelming and stressful,” McGregor said.

Advocates understand it can be a process to leave an abusive relationship.

“It takes a lot of time and very intentional planning,” McGregor said. “To just leave can be very careless and can actually put that person in a lot of danger.”

So, the nonprofit is ready to assist whenever that moment comes.

“We may only have a minute with someone or a couple of days,” she said. “Ultimately, it could save their life at some point in time, and that’s something that we do not take lightly.”

Harbor House’s shelter is at a confidential location.
