Municipal crisis: The quarterly report for 2024 shows a negative net operating profit of NOK 35.4 million, which could drain the municipality’s reserves of NOK 176 million within two to three years, Haugesund’s newspaper writes.

The health and care sector is the hardest hit. According to the newspaper, municipal director Ole Bernt Thorbjørnsen is proposing cuts of NOK 50 million, including a downsizing of approx. 50 man-years.

The measures include no new positions, minimal use of temps and overtime, and reduced travel and course activity. The school and nursery structure is also assessed for efficiency.

Mayor Bua emphasizes that cooperation is the key to avoid emptying the reserve fund and to ensure citizens’ services. The next meeting is planned for September, reports the newspaper.
