
Mr. Michel congratulated the President of the Republic on his election and expressed his desire for close and productive cooperation within the framework of the European Council
The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, had this afternoon a telephone conversation with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, during which he provided a preliminary briefing on his intention to seek more active and substantial involvement of the European Union in the efforts to break the impasse and the resumption of talks to resolve the Cyprus issue.
According to an announcement by the Presidency, during their telephone conversation, Mr. Michel congratulated the President of the Republic on his election and expressed his desire for close and productive cooperation within the framework of the European Council.
For his part, the President of the Republic thanked Mr. Michel for the wishes and provided an update on his priorities based on his governance program.
He also gave a preliminary briefing on his intention to seek a more active and substantial involvement of the European Union, both in the efforts to break the deadlock and to restart the talks, to resolve the Cyprus issue, a matter which he will discuss in detail with the President of the European Council, the Presidents of the other institutions as well as with his counterparts within the framework of his upcoming visit to Brussels.
In this context, according to the announcement, President Christodoulidis informed President Michel about his recent meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, as well as about the upcoming visit of a high-ranking United Nations official to Cyprus.
As reported, the President of the Republic also expressed his expectation for the rapid implementation of the provisions of the February European Council Conclusions on the preparation of an action plan for the Eastern Mediterranean migration route, in cooperation with the affected member states.
In addition, the two leaders had the opportunity to review the agenda of the upcoming European Council, on March 23 and 24, which will deal with, among other things, the competitiveness of the European economy, the Ukrainian, energy and – under the ” various” – immigration, the announcement concludes.
