Sport: – My close friend and NBA rival Bill Walton has died, and the world feels so much heavier. On the field, Bill was relentless, but off the field he did everything to make everyone around him feel good. He was the best of us, says one of the sport’s other legends, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

– Bill Walton was one of the best basketball players of all time, champion at all levels and the epitome of an unselfish team player. He was also full of curiosity, humor and kindness. We are poorer without him, says former President Barack Obama.

– From jump shots to incredible passes, he was one of the smartest basketball players ever. “Bill was a great ambassador for college basketball and the NBA, and he will be sorely missed,” said Magic Johnson.

Walton won two NCAA titles with UCLA University and became an NBA champion with the Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics. He overcame problems with stuttering and became one of the most beloved television commentators.

– Bill Walton was the only one of his kind, said NBA CEO Adam Silver, adding that Walton revolutionized the position of center with his skills.

He was also known for political activism on the left and love of the rock band Grateful Dead.

– Bill was my best friend. He called himself the luckiest man in the world, but we were lucky to know him. Some things in life can be replaced, others cannot. Bill was irreplaceable, says Mickey Hart, who was the drummer for the Grateful Dead.
