Accidents and natural disasters: The record measurement was made at the Tacubaya observatory on Saturday afternoon, just over two weeks after the previous heat record in the Mexican capital, according to the country’s weather service. On 9 May, 34.3 degrees were measured.

Scientists at the Independent National University of Mexico warned on Wednesday that increasing heat in the coming weeks could mean even more heat records.

Since March, 48 deaths related to intense heat waves have been recorded in Mexico. Last year, 419 heat-related deaths were recorded in the hot season, which runs from March to October.

Mexico has 129 million inhabitants. Over 20 million of them live in the capital, which is one of the world’s largest cities. It is located at an altitude of around 2,240 metres, just over 300 kilometers from the coast.
