Sport: With a point loss on Wednesday, that chance would be gone. In that case, the team will not have to beat city rivals City in the FA Cup final in order to play in Europe next season as well.

Rasmus Højlund’s 3-1 goal in the 84th minute was the winning goal. The Dane received the ball from Bruno Fernandes, broke away from two opponents and scored a couple of minutes after coming on for Amad Diallo.

Newcastle then had several great chances to equalise, and United were saved by André Onana on several occasions.

After the final whistle, the team’s heavily criticized manager Erik ten Hag took a microphone and addressed the crowd.

– On behalf of the players, the staff and myself, I would like to thank you all for your brilliant support this season. As you know it has not been an easy season, but one thing was constant and that was your support for the team, he said.

– The season is not over. First we go to Brighton and try to get three points, then we go to Wembley. And I promise that the players will give everything to secure the trophy and bring it here to Old Trafford, he continued, proclaiming the audience the world’s best supporters.

Many are wondering if Wednesday’s game was his last at Old Trafford as United manager.

Kobbie Mainoo scored the first goal in the 31st minute. He thought he was offside when Fernandes jumped over a forward from Diallo, but Kieran Trippier was asleep, and the goal was perfectly fine.

Casemiro, who was heavily criticized for sleeping and ruining offside when Arsenal scored the winner on Sunday, saved a Dan Burn header on the line later in the half, but Newcastle leveled early in the second half with Anthony Gordon’s close-range kick.

It came after Sofyan Amrabat failed completely with a clearance and Jacob Murphy was able to tap in from the side.

After Diallo’s 2-1 goal, Onana had to save alone with Sean Longstaff and tip a header from Joelinton over, before Gordon moved from Casemiro in the box and shot just wide of the far post. Miguel Almirón was centimeters from reaching the ball and putting it in.

Højlund looked set to decide the result, but in overtime Lewis Hall reduced and created nerves in the remaining minutes.,

Newcastle have a sad league record at Old Trafford. The team won convincingly there in the league cup earlier in the season, but apart from a victory in 2013, the team has not taken the full pot in a league match away from Manchester United since 1972.

That streak continued, and the stat since the win 52 years ago is now 1-10-28.

Diallo looked to be the match winner for a long time. He made it 2-1 beautifully in the 52nd minute. A corner kick from Fernandes was headed out, but Diallo struck on the spot and found a hole in a forest of players in front of the goal.

Newcastle had a great chance to take the lead with a three-on-one counterattack after an ugly turnover by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Alexander Isak hesitated to finish and Amrabat had his block blocked.
