Sport: Hovland started the round on Friday with three holes at par, before going one stroke over par and bogeying the fourth hole. After par on hole five, he got in with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, before there was again a bogey on hole eight and par on hole nine.

In the second part of the round, there were birdies for the Norwegian on holes 13, 15 and 18. He thus ended the round three strokes under par, and he is now a total of six strokes under par.

Hovland shares the position with Canadian Adam Hadwin, who led after the first round but only managed par in round two. World number one Scottie Scheffler leads, nine strokes under par.

Discovery commentator Per Haugsrud believes Hovland should have been two to three strokes better in Friday’s round.

– He may not have played dream golf, but he has played more than well enough to be up there with Scheffler. I have almost lost count of how many putts he has had on the edge of the hole today, says Haugsrud Eurosport.

– We have to look at it positively. He has a lot of punches to go. Nevertheless, he is right behind, says co-commentator Henrik Bjørnstad.

Last year, Hovland won the Memorial Tournament after a playoff. He himself has referred to the tournament as one of the toughest on the PGA Tour. This year’s tournament continues with the third of four rounds on Saturday.
