LONDON, OCT 31 – Interim Manchester United boss Ruud Van Nistelrooy says he will help ‘as long as he is needed’ as reports say Ruben Amorim, Erik ten Hag’s replacement, cannot take the job until next month.
United legend as a player Van Nistelrooy enjoyed a start as interim manager as United beat Leicester 5-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup yesterday.
Negotiations are ongoing with Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon to agree to let go of the 39-year-old coach.
According to reports in Portugal, Amorim will remain at Sporting for the next three games before completing his move during the November international break.
That leaves Van Nistelrooy in charge at least for Chelsea’s visit this weekend, a Europa League home game against PAOK, and another clash with Leicester.
“I came here as an assistant for the club. I help as long as I’m needed and in the future, in whatever capacity, I’m here to help the club build towards the future,” said Van Nistelrooy.
He added: “The reaction from the players has been very good. They deserve credit for a good win and I’m glad the crowd went home with an enjoyable night.”
Since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 with United’s 20th league title, five full-time managers have come and gone at Old Trafford. – AFP
