According to history.com, the term Black Friday, as it refers to the shopping day after Thanksgiving, originated in 1950s Philadelphia, when suburban shoppers, along with people in town for the Army-Navy football game traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, gave police there headaches.
Nationally the term didn’t catch on until the 1980s, when retailers seized on the term and gave it a more positive meaning.
