A promo code for cheaper coal is what PGG, the largest mining company in Europe, offers. Everything works like any online store site. You choose coal in the store, validate your basket and enter the code PGG112023 and you are entitled to a reduction of 200 zlotys per tonne purchased. The equivalent of around 50 euros.
But this is not the first time that the company has sold its coal. Last week, it had already reduced the price of some of its products, because coal producers are going through a complicated period. They have had too much stock since last year and consumption is down sharply.
If one in three Poles heated with coal in 2018, there would only be one in five today. And the instability of stocks due to the war in Ukraine and shortages last winter has caused some Poles to change the habits.
Many are turning to alternative, less polluting solutions. Because as many environmental associations point out, air pollution due to coal kills nearly 45,000 people per year in Poland, according to them.
