Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert dominates stage 2 Sazkza Tour: Rota wins, Pozzovivo third

Lorenzo Rota has won the second stage of the Sazka Tour. The Italian of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert was the strongest on the final climb, ahead of Oscar Onley and Domenico Pozzovivo.

The flight of the day was formed when there was almost a climb from the start. In the end it was Paul Double (Human Powered Health), Tim van Dijke (Jumbo-Visma), Moritz Kärsten (Development Team DSM) and Kristijan Koren (Adria Mobil) who managed to close the gap. After seventy kilometers of race they had a small lead of six minutes.

Led by Team Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise, the peloton gradually came closer to the front during the stage. With 100 kilometers to go, there was still 3.45 minutes left of the lead. At the front it was Double who came first on the first two categorized climbs, while Van Dijke won the first two intermediate sprints.

On the third categorized climb of the day, the pace in the pack picked up. At the top of this Soláň there were suddenly only fifty seconds left of the lead of the four in front. The front runners also started to accelerate, which was at the expense of Koren. On the ascent of the Bumbálka, Van Dijke took off alone. He single-handedly extended the lead to 1.10 minutes, with thirty kilometers to go.

Van Dijke kept up his solo for a long time, but the peloton had him towards the foot of the final climb of the day. De Pustevny – 7.9 kilometers at 6.6 percent – had to decide who would win here from the peloton. In the first kilometers the pace was set and classification leader Rune Herregodts had to get off. Rein Taaramae launched an attack four kilometers below the summit, but didn’t make it. Rota was the fastest to finish it in the final kilometer.
