Irene Cara dead: Oscar-winning ‘Flashdance,’ ‘Fame’ singer dies at 63

Oscar-winning singer Irene Cara is dead at 63, her publicist announced Saturday morning.

Cara died in her Florida home, publicist Judith A. Moose said. A cause of death is currently unknown.

“Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films,” Moose said. “Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

Cara was a singer, dancer and actress as a child, appearing on stage and on television, including Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show” in the 1970s and “The Electric Company.” She had her breakout role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 movie musical, “Fame,” and sang the title track; she was nominated for two Grammys, including Best New Artist.

Cara cemented her legacy by co-writing and singing “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” for the 1983 Jennifer Beals movie “Flashdance.” Cara won a Grammy Award and an Academy Award for the film’s theme song.

She released four albums and appeared in more than 20 other movies and TV shows, including 1976′s “Sparkle,” 1983′s “D.C. Cab,” 1984′s “City Heat” and episodes of “Kojak,” “What’s Happening,” “Gabriel’s Fire,” “Roots: The Next Generations” and “Hearts Are Wild.” She also performed on stage in productions like “The Wiz” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

Moose invited fans to share their memories of the singer on Cara’s official social media pages.

“I’ll be reading each and every one of them and she’ll be smiling from Heaven,” Moose said. “She adored her fans.”
