CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities say one person is dead and two injured in a shooting at an assisted-living complex in New London, just west of Lorain County.
The village’s police chief, Joe Hicks, told reporters that a tenant shot two employees of the Windy Acres at about 10:50 a.m. Friday. The tenant then died by suicide, Hicks said at a press conference covered by local television stations.
The two employees were taken to a local hospital, though it was unclear their conditions. Hicks said his office is investigating a motive. He declined to release the identities of the people involved.
The shooting stunned the Huron County village of 2,600.
“People talk about sleepy New London,” Hicks said. “But in this day and age, it can happen anywhere.”
An official with Beacon 360 Management, which owns the property, said the complex was locked down for hours after the shooting, which took place in the lobby and office area. Beacon 360, of Columbus, provides affordable housing to residents across Ohio.
Huron County sheriff’s deputies and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting in the case.
