KOTA KINABALU, SEPT 4 – The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sabah seized 20.29 kilograms (kg) of drugs methamphetamine worth RM649,440 at the MASKargo warehouse last August 30.
Sabah Zone Customs Assistant Director General, Siti Mang, said all the drugs hidden in golden yellow plastic packages were detected by air cargo customs officers, Sabah Zone Narcotics Branch Team at about 9am.
“There are 20 golden yellow plastic packages suspected to contain dangerous drugs. Further inspection of the package found a number of drugs methamphetamine or syabu.
“All drugs are packaged using golden yellow plastic believed to be intended to confuse the authorities.
This case is currently under further investigation to detect any larger syndicate network,” he said at a press conference today.
He said the modus operandi of this case was to use golden yellow plastic packages with Chinese tea brands that were tried to be smuggled into the country through air cargo.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which, if convicted, can result in mandatory death or life imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Siti said smuggling activities not only cost the country in terms of lost revenue, but also pose a threat to national security and the well-being of the people. – Named
