Daniil Medvedev will defend his title at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam next year. The Russian world top player has promised his arrival to tournament director Richard Krajicek, who is delighted with it.
“We really wanted to get the champion of the last edition and are very happy that we succeeded,” says Krajicek on Friday. “Especially given his series of victories after Rotterdam. He is playing very well. Medvedev also loves the Netherlands and would like to defend his title.”
Medvedev won the fiftieth edition of the ABN AMRO Open in February. The former number one in the world settled in the final on the hard court in Ahoy with the Italian Jannik Sinner: 5-7, 6-2 and 6-2.
As Krajicek points out, this was the start of a strong phase in Medvedev’s career. The 27-year-old Russian recently won the prestigious tournaments in Miami and Rome. In the world rankings, he currently only has to tolerate the Spanish top talent Carlos Alcaraz.
“Medvedev was already called the ‘King of Hardcourt’, but in Rome he showed that he also belongs to the absolute world top on clay,” says Krajicek. “For me he is definitely one of the favorites for Roland Garros. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is number one in the world again later this year.”
The ABN AMRO Open runs from 10 to 18 February. Krajicek hopes to sign even more world top players in the coming months. “The last edition has proven that our approach works. The tennis was of an incredibly high level. The fans saw an appealing top player in action in every session. That is also the goal for next year.”
