PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A man is in custody following a five-hour standoff with a SWAT unit that began after he reportedly shot his wife in the leg.
Lt. Larry Harpster, detective bureau commander for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, says in a news release that Jeffry Wyman, 63, is being held in jail on a charge of felonious assault.
Deputies were called to the 1600 block of West Jackson Street at about 10 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of shots being fired. When deputies arrived, they found the victim, a 56-year-old woman, at a neighbor’s home with a gunshot wound to her leg.
Meanwhile, Wyman went back into his home and refused to come out, Harpster says. Negotiators were able to convince Wyman to surrender without incident early Tuesday morning.
Harpster says the victim was taken by ambulance to University Hospitals Tripoint Medical Center in Concord Township, then flown by helicopter to UH Hospitals in Cleveland. Her wounds are not considered life-threatening.
Harpster says additional charges could be filed against Wyman.
