GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — Lee Richardson Zoo is now home to eight new animals.
Some animals remain in quarantine but will soon be visible to guests. The first group comes from the Abilene Zoo in Texas and includes two female rheas, a large flightless bird related to ostriches and emus, and a male and two female cavies, a type of rodent that resembles a rabbit.
Rheas and cavies are native to South America. The zoo will house them in its “South American Pampas.”
Next, a pair of burrowing cave owls will live in the area previously housed by the swift fox in the Kansas Waters and Cat Canyons. That area includes a tunnel that leads to a viewing portal inside the habitat where the pair, named Clive and Fergie, will live.
Next, from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, is a 1-year-old female addax named Sahara, named after her native habitat in Africa; she joins two males, Dobby and his son Wu.
