Leeds United linked with Valencia left-back Vazquez, Sky pundit reacts

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson wants Leeds United to sign a more experienced left-back than Jesus Vazquez after the Valencia teenager was linked with a move to Elland Road in January.

Radio Marca Valencia reported via their Twitter account on 16 November that the Whites are interested in the 19-year-old as they look for a new left-back.

Plaza Deportiva added that the Spain Under-19 international has recently changed agency and his representatives have since visited England.

Junior Firpo has struggled since joining Leeds from Barcelona last year with the Dominican Republic left-back suffering continuous injuries, constantly getting booked and playing badly.

Pascal Struijk has played at left-back for most of this season despite naturally being a centre-back.

And Robinson fears that Struijk will be forced to continue in that role if Vazquez comes in during January and fails to stamp his authority on Jesse Marsch’s starting line-up.

“It’s all well and good buying young players for the future. But Leeds need a left-back for the here and now,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

You cannot take a risk on a 19-year-old who’s untried and untested in the Premier League.

If a 19-year-old comes in from Spain in January and doesn’t do particularly well, you’ve got to have Pascal Struijk at left-back for the rest of the season. That’s not a bad thing but it’s not Struijk’s preferred position.

Junior Firpo’s not the answer – that was decided a long time ago – so I don’t know why they haven’t gone into the market to sign a left-back.

I personally would like to see them sign one that’s Premier League-ready and ready for the team now.

Whether it’s one from abroad, Bundesliga or La Liga. Wherever. Just somebody with first-team experience who’s guaranteed to come in and hit the ground running.”

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport on 16 November (page four), Vazquez is earning just £9,000-a-week (£463,000-a-year) at Valencia but has a £34.9million release clause tied into his deal.

In other Leeds United news, we can exclusively reveal that a takeover by the 49ers could be done within weeks.
