Sport: Before Sunday’s feat, Leverkusen, who are still unbeaten this season, were without league gold despite the club’s 120-year history.

Victor Boniface scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot after 25 minutes before assisting Granit Xhaka after the hour mark. Florian Wirtz made it 3-0 eight minutes later.

Wirtz completed his hat trick in overtime after making it 4-0 eight minutes from time.

With five games left in the season, Leverkusen has a lead of 16 points down to Bayern Munich in 2nd place, and thus cannot be overtaken.

Bayern have won the Bundesliga for the last eleven seasons.

For many years, Leverkusen was labeled as the big near-team in Germany. After the cup triumph in 1993, the club has been second best in the Bundesliga five times and lost three cup finals.

In addition to the historic league title, Alonso’s men have the opportunity to win both two and three trophies this season. Leverkusen are ready for the German Cup final, where they are huge favorites against level two team Kaiserslautern.

They are also in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they lead 2-0 over West Ham after the first match. The return leg will be played in London on 18 April.

Alonso has worked wonders with Leverkusen during his year and a half as head coach. The Spaniard took over an injury-hit Leverkusen halfway through last season and led the team to the semi-finals of the Europa League and sixth place in the Bundesliga.

Despite this year’s season and a number of rumors that the 42-year-old is wanted by both Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, he has announced that he has chosen to continue in Leverkusen.
