Policy: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been asking Western countries for months to lift the restrictions on the weapons that are given to the country.

Not being able to attack targets on Russian soil is like boxing with one hand behind your back, he has maintained.

After 27 months of war, it seems that he is finally being heard.

– We believe that we should allow them to neutralize military sites where rockets are launched, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a press conference with German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz during the state visit to Germany.

However, he specifies that French weapons can only be used to attack bases used in the attacks against Ukraine. France has provided Ukraine with long-range missiles of the SCALP type.

Macron also caused a furor earlier this spring with statements that it is not inconceivable to send Western soldiers to Ukraine.

Scholz, who until now has been a staunch opponent of allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons against targets on Russian soil, now says that Ukraine has “every right under international law” to attack Russia in order to defend itself.

However, Germany has so far not agreed to Ukraine’s plea for long-range Taurus missiles.

In a meeting with EU defense ministers on Tuesday, he tried to persuade those EU countries that remain skeptical to give Ukraine the green light to attack targets on Russian territory.

The skepticism is based on fear that the war will eventually develop into a direct conflict between Russia and NATO countries.

Stoltenberg partially succeeded, says EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell to NTB.

– Some countries turned around. But not all, he says and reminds that this is up to each individual country to decide.

The US is currently adamant that Ukraine cannot use US weapons against military targets on Russian soil.

The message was clear, according to Bild: Ukraine must wait until the bombers have dropped their cargo over Ukraine, before they can attack them.

If something like this happens again, Berlin and Washington threaten to stop supplying Patriot systems to Ukraine, the newspaper writes.

On Tuesday evening, Europe’s heavyweights France and Germany turned, write Financial Times.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has also used his weight to support Zelenskyj.

According to the German newspaper Picture the Ukrainians recently received a slap from Germany and the US when a German Patriot air defense system was used to shoot down a Russian bomber.
