Man convicted of 2022 slaying of woman gets life in prison

AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County judge immediately sentenced an Akron man to prison Wednesday after convicting him of the 2022 slaying of a 34-year-old woman.

Judge Christine Croce ruled that Quinton Nixon, 33, will not be eligible for parole until he has served 21 years of his sentence for killing Toni Westover in July 2022. Nixon also was placed on the state’s Violent Crime Registry.

Moments before sentencing, Croce ruled that Nixon was guilty of two counts of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. If released, Nixon will have to register with a local sheriff’s office every 10 years.

“Quinton Nixon shot and killed Toni Westover,” Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said in a statement. “He deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison.”

A news release from Kolkovich’s office says Nixon shot Westover at a home on Maryland Avenue in the Kenmore neighborhood on July 25, 2022. Nixon was arrested about a month later when he was found hiding in the attic of a home during a standoff with police.

Croce also found Nixon guilty of improperly handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle from a separate incident in June 2022.
