CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man who fatally shot a store clerk after becoming angry because the clerk questioned the condition of his money was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison.
Da’Quan Isaac, 27, of Akron, was sentenced by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Joy Malek Oldfield moments after pleading guilty to charges of murder and felonious assault. Both charges included gun specifications.
Isaac shot Ahmed Alibrahim, 22, on Dec. 12, 2023, at Borders Drive-Thru, 1365 S. Arlington St., in East Akron.
“Ahmed Alibrahim was a kind and caring person, loved by his friends and family,” Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said in a statement. “My hope is today’s plea and sentence bring them some peace following this senseless tragedy.”
Officers were called to Borders Drive-Thru at about 11:16 p.m. on Dec. 12. Investigators say the suspect walked up to the drive-thru and wanted to buy a cigar.
Isaac is accused of handing Alibrahim a bill in unacceptable condition and began arguing with him when the money wasn’t accepted. Isaac then pulled out a handgun and demanded the cigar, police say.
Alibrahim gave Isaac the cigar and then asked him to leave, police say. Isaac is accused of firing at least two shots through the window at employees inside the store, hitting Alibrahim.
Isaac will be eligible for parole after serving 18 years of his sentence, according to a news release from the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office. Isaac also was placed on Ohio’s Violent Crime Registry, so if he is released from prison, he must register with the local sheriff every year for 10 years.
