Sport: – I was surprised that it went so fast in the last corners and I had to maneuver a bit to get into position, but I found my moment. This must be disappointing for everyone who dislikes me, said Merlier.

He relegated Jonathan Milan and Kaden Groves, the two ahead of him in the battle for the points jersey, to 2nd and 3rd place.

Merlier took his second victory in this year’s Giro d’Italia. Once he was displaced from 2nd place for obstructing a competitor in the sprint.

Today’s break was driven in with 10.3 kilometers to go. Then it had been expected for a long time that it would end with a mass sprint.

There was a lot of competition, but it was the Soudal-QuickStep rider Merlier who was the best in the hectic finish with Milan from Lidl-Trek in the rear. Then followed Groves (Alpecin) and Christian Scaroni (Astana).

The 178 kilometer stage from Fiera di Primiero to Padua was completed in 3.45.44 hours.

Overall leader Tadej Pogacar kept a low profile throughout the stage and entered undramatically together with a united main field. He is still a comfortable 7.42 minutes ahead of Daniel Felipe Martínez in the summary. Behind them follows Geraint Thomas.
