Accidents and natural disasters: Dozens of rescue teams have searched all night until Friday, but without success.

– The search is unfortunately fruitless, says operations manager Theodor Weberg Ellingsen in the Finnmark police district to NTB on Friday morning.

The 11-year-old boy from Alta was reported missing from Stabbursdalen camp school in Porsanger at 5.50pm on Thursday. Fellow pupils saw the boy go out into the Stabburselva to fetch a football – before he suddenly disappeared.

The police assume that the 11-year-old was taken by a strong current in the river at the camp school. The river is big because of snowmelt. Sometime later, a football was found in the river.

– We suspect that football is relevant to this case, says the operations manager.

Several rescue helicopters, the police, volunteers, the Red Cross and Norwegian rescue dogs have contributed to the search. Several tens of people participated on the night of Friday, according to the police.

Ellingsen says that because of the midnight sun, they have good light conditions, and the weather has been fine.

Three school classes from Alta were at the camp school when the boy went missing. Everyone has been sent home.
