My stories with Jô Soares – 08/05/2022

We are all regretting the death of Jo Soares. As soon as I opened the computer and saw the news on the internet, it sent a chill down my spine. I learned that the “man of the seven instruments” had left us. In the world of the arts, we can choose any activity that he, in one way or another, wandered through it.

And almost everything with excellence: writer, theater director, musician, presenter of television and radio programs, playwright, theater director, actor, comedian. Where he put his hands it worked. Very right.

If so many are talking about him, why would this text fit here? I want to record how important he was in my career as a teacher and as a writer. The fact that he took me twice to be interviewed on his show was a real game-changer.

In the 1990s, many professionals had two aspirations: to be interviewed in the Yellow Pages of Veja magazine and on the Jô Soares program. I remember people who spread banners through the streets of São Paulo begging: Jô, interview me. It really was a kind of crowning achievement.

I had already been interviewed for Páginas Amarelas, but going to the Jô Soares program was a distant dream. I thought: it would be interesting to go to the program to give some communication tips. With so many people waiting in line, however, he would never have that opportunity. The distant dream came true. Not once, but twice.

The first time I went to your show, on SBT, in July 1999, it was to launch the book “Assim é que se fala”, by Editora Saraiva. As sometimes happened, the interview aired at dawn. Even so, because of our conversation, within a week the first edition was completely sold out. And it went to the country’s bestseller lists.

The second time, at Globo, in August 2001, it was to release another book, “A good way to speak well”, by the same publisher. The phenomenon repeated itself. Within a week, the edition of the work was sold out, and it was also on the country’s best-seller lists.

These two facts alone would be enough to mark my career. Going to your show, however, was a big challenge for me.

As a public speaking teacher, I would need to do very well. People would be watching if what I taught also applied in practice.

Before going to the first interview, some people did real terrorism with me. Careful, Polito, I’ve seen a lot of people get gloated in that chair. He does not let the interviewee speak. And, if it’s not with the guy’s face, it’s a God to help us. I heard the same story from several acquaintances. Well, but if everything went smoothly, it could be quite a pleasant chat.

That terrorism was unfounded. I was treated with great kindness and consideration. When he interrupted me, he immediately apologized and asked me to finish what he was saying. And all in a light and very humorous way. Two moments just to illustrate.

We talked about the importance of people recording their presentations and then watching to correct the defects and get the speech right. I commented that this was the procedure we adopted with our students in the classroom. Careful to only show them the successes and the positive aspects.

With his quick, instant presence of mind, as soon as I finished speaking, he said to me: You know, Professor, I don’t like to watch my presentations. Every time I see myself in the video I feel fat. Needless to say, the audience erupted in raucous laughter.

Another genius take from the master of humor. He had asked me to better explain one of the chapters of my book “A Good Way to Talk Well”: “Learn to Talk in the Elevator”. I gave all the tips to start, develop and conclude a conversation in the elevator between three or four floors.

He listened carefully. As we had commented on the progress of a former student who was known for having wordy communication, Eduardo Suplicy, Jô did not miss the chance to show his humorous vein: Polito, between us, these techniques are not useful for your Suplicy student, right? ? Another shot that provoked an immediate reaction in the public.

My first contact with him happened in 1990. He was one of the speakers at the event “Câmera 90”, held at Maksoud Plaza. The audience was packed. As soon as he got to the stage, he asked for a photographer’s camera and said he also wanted to take some pictures.

He pointed the camera at the listeners, who were all seated, and asked them to get together to fit everyone in the picture. It only took a second for everyone to realize that it would be impossible to fulfill that request. General laughter. Even if he hadn’t given the lecture, just that one would have been worth the ticket.

A little bit of my experience with Jô Soares to show the deep admiration and gratitude I always had for him. And how it will always be among my fondest memories. Rest in peace.
