Neos speak in Burgos; after Tronchon also Govekar and Retailleau: ‘This was unexpected’

The Tour of Burgos is proving to be a great place for young talent to get their hands dirty. On Thursday Bastien Tronchon surprised friend and foe by beating Pavel Sivakov and on Friday the two best escapees turned out to be both neo-pros. Matevž Govekar from Bahrain – Victorious defeated Valentin Retailleau in the sprint uphill.

After his victory, Govekar indicated that he was very surprised by his victory in the fourth stage. “I knew I had a good sprint, so I decided to play that card. Then I pushed towards the end and managed to win. This was unexpected,” said the young Slovenian, who is only 22 years old, immediately after the finish to various media.

He made the switch from Tirol KTM Cycling Team to Bahrain – Victorious on June 1st and already has his first win inside for the team. ‘The team’s plan was to join a large leading group, and that produced a very good result. Although I actually hoped it would be a little less difficult, because this was very difficult!’

Retailleau ‘disappointed’ and ‘satisfied’ at the same time

Retailleau also spoke to the media after the stage. The Frenchman responded with l’Equipe in second place. “Obviously I’m disappointed to miss out on the win here. After the victory of Bastien (Tronchon, his teammate, red) on Thursday, I was very motivated to imitate him. To come so close to victory is a shame, but it does promise great things for the future. It’s my first race as a neo-pro, so actually I put in a really good performance and I’m still happy. But I am disappointed nonetheless. In the final I tried to bluff a bit and I did that pretty well, but in the sprint I just missed a little extra power.’
