Policy: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims Gülen, who has lived in exile in the United States since 1999, pulled the strings during an attempted coup in 2016. The now 83-year-old preacher denies this.

Thousands of alleged followers of the preacher have since been imprisoned, over 3,000 of them for life. Over 140,000 others have been fired from public positions, including teachers and police officers.

Tuesday’s arrests took place in 62 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, says Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

According to him, the arrests took place after the suspects on behalf of Gülen tried to take exams that would have secured them public positions, while others had communicated via the Bylock app, which Turkish authorities claim Gülen controls.
