Norwegian teenager is highly ranked before the NHL draft – could be selected in the first round

Sport: Last week was The NHL’s final roster over so-called “Draft Prospects” until this summer’s draft is ready, and there the young Norwegian marks himself at the top. Among the international outfield players, i.e. the non-North Americans, Brandsegg-Nygård is ranked 5th.

Brandsegg-Nygård is the son of the long-standing Vålerenga player Kjell Richard Nygård and was born and raised in Oslo. He played junior hockey in VIF before moving to Sweden and Mora ahead of the 2022/23 season.

At level two in Sweden, he has had a breakthrough in the past year. He recorded 18 goals in 41 games in the regular season and another ten points in twelve games in the playoffs.

Brandsegg-Nygård was also good for Norway in the junior WC and has already made his debut for the national team at senior level.

Brandsegg-Nygård himself has a goal of being selected in the first round of the NHL draft. No Norwegian has ever been before.

– Now I’ve made up my mind that I’ll go in the first round. Then of course I will be very disappointed if nothing happens, he added Television 2 in November.

The Russian KHL defender Anton Silajev tops the ranking among the European players. Among the North Americans, Macklin Celebrini from the University of Boston is given the greatest chance in the draft.

The actual NHL draft takes place on 28 and 29 June, probably in Las Vegas. Before that, a draft lottery will be held to determine the order in which the NHL teams may choose.

– A super guy in every way. He fights in every situation. He really loves the sport and he is going to be good, Mora coach Daniel Hermansson has said of the 18-year-old.

Another two Norwegians are among the 100 biggest international talents heading into the NHL draft. Vålerenga back Stian Solberg is in 20th place, while Lørenskog runner Mathias Dehli is ranked number 80. They are also 18 years old.
