JAY, Okla. (KSNW) — An Oklahoma sheriff’s office says a mother shot her two young children before taking her own life.
Our sister station, KSNF in Joplin, reports the investigation began around 6 a.m. Saturday, east of Ketchum near the Grand Lake of the Cherokees. The Deleware County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate an abandoned vehicle. Inside, deputies found the bodies of a woman and two young children.
Authorities say the woman is the mother of the two children, ages 5 and 7. She has been identified as Alisia Pena, 38, of Tulsa.
“The two children were shot first, and then she (Pena) turned the gun on herself,” said Undersheriff James Morgan.
Morgan says it’s not clear why Pena and her children were in the area of the lake, but she was last seen with friends in Ketchum around 2:35 a.m. He says it doesn’t appear Pena was involved in a domestic issue or custody battle.
“We are still interviewing family members and friends,” said Morgan.
