Ola Borten Moe asks us to think about the Jews in Norway on National Day

War and conflicts: He tells Dagens Næringsliv that we must acknowledge our contribution to the genocide on the Jews during the war. He points out that Norwegian Jews are more vulnerable than before, and that it is our responsibility to protect them, especially in view of our history.

– The Norwegian state apparatus was far too conscientious to round up Jews on behalf of the Nazis, send them to their deaths and confiscate Jewish property. This is in sharp contrast to, for example, Denmark. And until 1851, the Constitution denied Jews access to the country. Both parts are a great disgrace in Norwegian history.

Borten Moe, who is a member of Friends of Israel in the Storting, believes that with this background it is even more important to protect the Jews in Norway, a minority of just under 1,500 people.

– It is legitimate to demonstrate against Israel’s warfare, but there is no doubt that we live in a society where Jews are exposed and anti-Semitism is increasing. It is unacceptable and must be addressed on 17 May, says the former minister to DN.

A survey from the HL center shows that anti-Semitic attitudes are increasing in Norway. Several Jews have reported in recent months that they hide symbols that show who they are.

– When pro-Palestinians shout “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, it means that the Jews must disappear from Israel. The combined pressure from boycott demands and anti-Israel demonstrations will be great, says Borten Moe.
