Orange elementary school students get jump start on school bus safety

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – National School Bus Safety Week is celebrated the third week of October, but Moreland Hills Elementary School students got a jump start in September.

Students were divided into groups by grade to work with Sheila Dikowicz, Orange City Schools transportation coordinator, and her team of bus drivers.

According to a news release from the district, the students learned how to watch for drivers’ hand signals letting them know when it’s okay to cross; where the different safety tools and emergency exits are on each bus; and the importance of alwaysbeing safe on, off and around a school bus.

Students will participate in safety evacuation drills in the coming months.

‘Lion Kings’ parade through school

Members of the Orange High School varsity football team were treated like “Lion Kings” when they paraded through Moreland Hills Elementary School recently, led by the school’s varsity cheerleaders.

Head football coach Rob Senor and the players received high-fives, applause and “go team” signs from the elementary school students as they geared up for the game that night.

The Lions were 4-1 going into their Homecoming game against Painesville Harvey High School Friday (Sept. 27).

Youth Night generates spirit

The 2024 Youth Night generated much spirit for Friday night football in September.

Young football players and cheerleaders joined their middle school and high school counterparts, while members of the eighth-grade band and junior Lionettes joined the Orange High School Marching Lion Band.

Dozens of youth cheerleaders enjoyed being able to cheer for the Lions with help from the middle school and varsity cheer teams, under the direction of advisers Stacy Dorsey and Dena McSweeney.
