Economy and business: – The theater is in a very serious financial situation. I feel that we have a very good dialogue with the board and the theater about how we can find opportunities out of this, but as the situation is now, I do not have the opportunity to conclude one very different way, says cultural councilor Anita Leirvik North (H) to NRK.

She tells the state channel that if the city council does not allocate NOK 30 million before the summer, the theater will go bankrupt.

– It is not a wish to bankrupt the theatre, but here and now it is not possible for me to promise anything, says North.

Oslo Nye Teater, which has around 150,000 audiences annually, has long struggled financially due to the after-effects of the pandemic and wage and price increases, in addition to what managing director Jan Beckmann describes as “historically high pension costs”.

– The most acute problem is that Oslo Nye Teater does not have sufficient liquidity to maintain operations over the summer, Beckmann said in a statement earlier this week.
